Equity Enhancement Fund — call for proposals

As part of UBC’s commitment to advancing equity and inclusion across its campuses, faculty and staff are invited to submit a proposal by June 5 for projects that respond to community needs and advance one or more of the actions outlined in UBC’s Inclusion Action Plan.

Applicants can request up to $5,000 per project in Vancouver and up to $1,500 in the Okanagan.

Reminder: Masks are required in UBC indoor public spaces until June 30

A reminder that masks are required in public indoor spaces (i.e. including the USB atriums, lobbies, hallways, washrooms, training rooms, or where signage indicates)  on both campuses until June 30.

This decision was based on evidence that masks are a simple, but important, way to continue to provide all members of the UBC community with an added layer of protection. They also provide an additional layer of protection for our most vulnerable among us.

Mechanical Team BBQ

In a 2017 WES survey, our staff had a great suggestion of hosting a BBQ to connect and strengthen our teams. Four and a half years later — and after a worldwide pandemic — the Mechanical Team finally had their very first BBQ event!

Crews 12, 22, 22S, 31, and 31S — a total of 88 including the managers — all enjoyed the camaraderie of a barbecue cookout over two events to accommodate everyone. Overall the event was very well received, marking it the first of hopefully many more.

If other crews/teams are interested in utilizing the BBQ usage, it can be reserved as a tool from Stores through Planon and guidelines have been developed for use.

EDI – Embracing our differences

At the VPFO, we strive to create a diverse, inclusive, safe and vibrant workplace for our teams to thrive and build meaningful connections — and one of the first steps to achieving that is by embracing our differences.

This week's VPFO EDI article covers a range of topics, from an inspiring lesson about celebrating differences by Cole Blakely — a ten-year-old whose close friend is Steven, a 44-year-old man with Autism — to the hate and discrimination marginalized communities still face to this day, such as the devastating shooting in Buffalo, NY over the past weekend.

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

While Canada’s LGBTQ population is growing, Statistics Canada’s report in 2021 shows threats facing LGBTQ Canadians — such as a spike in hate crimes targeting people for their sexual orientation. In 2019, police reported 263 such incidents, a 41 per cent increase over the previous year and the highest total since 2009.

Emergency Tip: Packing non-perishable food in your emergency kit

Non-perishable foods are an important part of your emergency preparedness kit. Choose items such as canned vegetables, fruits, and stews that are ready to eat. Crackers, cookies and granola bars are also a good choice, along with nuts and dried fruit. Don't forget to replace items once per year.

For more information about preparing an emergency food kit, visit the Government of Canada’s website

Tip: UBC faculty and staff can now receive a 10% discount on items in the Total Prepare website. Use code UBC-SRS-EP at checkout. Some restrictions may apply.

Building Safety Capacity: Preventing and Addressing Workplace Bullying and Harassment

At UBC, we strive to provide a safe, respectful, and productive work environment and prevent bullying and harassment. The first steps are to understand what bullying and harassment are, how to recognize and respond to bullying and harassment, and what resources are available.

UBC Safety & Risk Services offers a mandatory Preventing and Addressing Workplace Bullying and Harassment Training for all staff, faculty and student employees. Additional bullying and harassment resources can be found on UBC's bullying and harassment website, and WorkSafe BC.

Let’s support each other in building a positive and supportive workplace environment that values diversity, opportunity, and inclusion.
