December 6 is The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

December 6, 1989 marks the day an armed man walked into an engineering class at I'école Polytechnique de Montréal and killed 14 women and injured ten more.  This act of violent misogyny led Parliament to designate December 6 as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Updated Facilities Policies & Procedures: I-B-11 UBC Facilities Personal Protective Equipment Program 

Safety & Risk Services is in the process of updating existing I-B Safety Policies and Procedures. Policies I-B-11 Personal Protective Equipment and I-B-39 Personal Clothing and Accessories have been updated to become I-B-11 UBC Facilities Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Program. As such, I-B-39 Personal Clothing and Accessories has been retired.  

Below is a list of key changes: 

  • The following sections have been added: 
    • Definitions 
    • Legal Requirements 
    • Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment 
    • Risk Controls 
    • Education & Training 
    • Use, Storage and Maintenance of PPE 
    • Personal Clothing and Accessories 
  • The following section has been removed: Request for Variance 
  • The Following appendices have been added: 
    • Generalized PPE Requirements 
    • General Guidance on the Selection of PPE 

The updated I-B-11 UBC Facilities PPE Program document was reviewed by the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees within UBC Facilities. 

Facilities staff who utilize personal protective equipment should review the updated document, which can be found on the Facilities Shared Drive as well as on the UBC Facilities website

Facilities' United Way World Cup Update: After Group Stage 

16 teams have advanced and 16 have been eliminated as of Friday, December 2 at 1:00 pm. 

Those with both of their teams advancing are still alive:  

  • Netherlands, Senegal, England, USA, Argentina, Poland, France, Australia, Japan, Spain, Morocco, Croatia, Brazil, Switzerland, Portugal, Korea Republic  

Those with one or both of their teams eliminated cannot win: 

  • Ecuador, Qatar, Iran, Wales, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Denmark, Germany, Costa Rica, Belgium, Canada, Cameroon, Serbia, Uruguay, Ghana 

Knockout games start on Saturday, December 3, and tomorrow we'll be down to eight teams! 


Upcoming absence updates in 2023, including legislative leave 

With the start of the new calendar year, UBC faculty and staff will see some updates to their paid sick leave (including legislative sick leave) and vacation balances in Workday. Lani McGill, HR Product Manager, shares a preview of absence and time off changes for 2023 and timelines on the ISC website. 

Managers and HR Administrators are encouraged to share any relevant information with their areas.

Reminder: Early payroll deadline to enter and approve time for December 

To accommodate the winter break, the deadline for time entry, submission and approval is December 21, 2022.  

The deadline for employees and timekeepers to enter and submit time (both absences and hours worked), and for managers to approve time submitted in Workday, is Wednesday, December 21, 2022 for the pay periods of: 

  • December 16–December 31, 2022 for monthly employees 
  • December 9–December 23, 2022 for hourly employees 

Managers are advised to set up delegation if they will be away from work and unable to access Workday during this period. For guidance on how to do this, please refer to the Set Up Delegation in the Workday Knowledge Base. 

Any unplanned absences (e.g. sick time) or corrections to vacation for these pay periods must be submitted no later than January 8, 2023 and managers must approve by January 9, 2023.
