Facilities teams work together to ensure an ideal exam experience for UBC students
Setting up an exam space is not an easy task — it requires hours of hard work and strict compliance with UBC’s exam requirements, especially with space setup and delivery of exam booklets.
Twice a year, at end of Term 1 and 2, Custodial Services and Municipal Services work together to set up Osborne Gym and Student Recreation Centre (SRC) Gym with 1,340 tables and chairs, to support and maintain an ideal exam experience for UBC students.
Municipal Services’ Streets & Operations Support (SOS) team moves these items from South Campus warehouse to both gyms, where the Service Workers take over tarping the gym floors and laying out all of the items. During the exams, Custodial Services ensure the exam booklets in all of the exam spaces on campus are replenished.
Kudos to both teams for another excellent setup effort this past week!
Thank you for supporting the UBC United Way Campaign!
With three successful campaigns, UBC Facilities was able to raise money for the United Way and give back to the community.
As a recap:
- The Great Dip Off on November 23 was a tremendous success, raising $391 for the United Way. The Kirklanders was voted as the winning team by our guest judges, David Speight, John Metras and Ricky Yada, while the Dipologists won the People's Choice.
- The 2022 World Cup finalists’ lottery ended on December 18 with Argentina winning against France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. Dan Strikaitis won first place (Argentina vs France) and James Bellavance won second place (Morocco vs Croatia).
- Our third campaign Silent Auction Week raised $420 for United Way.
Facilities raised a total of $1,153 for the United Way. Thank you all for representing Facilities and supporting local communities with your participation, hard work and donation!

Nationwide menstrual hygiene supplies shortage
Due to supply chain issues, we are currently experiencing delays in refilling our menstrual hygiene dispensers in washrooms across the UBC Vancouver campus. our teams are working with our suppliers and distribution centres, however, we do not have a confirmed date when supplies will be available.
Since 2019, Custodial Services has been working with Free Periods Canada, a grassroots organization founded by UBC students, to promote intersectional menstrual equity by ensuring all menstruators have access to the products and information they need. Currently, over 300 menstrual hygiene dispensers have been installed across the UBC Vancouver campus, providing free sanitary pads and tampons. UBC embraces mass timber with $180 million Gateway Building
The new Gateway Building was recently featured in the Journal of Commerce by ConstructConnect.
The Gateway building design won the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence in 2021, with the jury commenting that the targeted GHGI goal of 1.4 was a significant achievement.
The wood construction also represents three of UBC's core values in designing the new Gateway Building: sustainability, personal well-being and Indigenous collaboration. Learn more about the Gateway Building project on the Infrastructure Development website.

Get a Team Together and Walk for Joy
Formerly known as Walkabout, Walk for Joy will run from January 30, 2023, to April 2, 2023. It is an annual 9-week walking challenge that strives to promote regular physical activity in social settings. The program is open to all UBC students, staff, faculty and community members. Form a team of five and monitor steps and overall physical activities over the 9-week period.

- Participant referrals – this year, registrants will have the option to state who referred them to Walk for Joy. For each time a participant’s name is mentioned, they will be entered to win a special Move UBC prize pack. Want more chances at winning a prize? Encourage more colleagues to sign up!

EDI: What is a land acknowledgement and how do you do it?
It’s important that this recognition of territory and our relationship with indigenous people doesn’t appear as just a formality. Take a moment to appreciate the meaning behind the words we use:
- Traditional: recognizes lands traditionally used and/or occupied by the Musqueam people or other First Nations in other parts of the country.
- Ancestral: recognizes land that is handed down from generation to generation.
- Unceded: refers to land that was not turned over to the Crown (government) by a treaty or other agreement.

Weekly Emergency Tip: Learn basic First Aid and CPR
Following a disaster, first responders will be overwhelmed and assisting those that are severely injured. Having basic first aid and CPR skills is an important part of personal emergency preparedness, and it may help you save the life of loved ones and neighbors. Contact your local chapter of the Canadian Red Cross today to get trained, or visit their website to sign up.
Our Campus Security patrol officers are Occupational First Aid Level 2 (OFA2) certified and provide First Aid for students, faculty, staff, student-staff, and visitors on the UBC Vancouver Point Grey campus. If you are faculty, staff, or student staff and require first aid on campus, please dial 604-822-4444. If you are a student or visitor and require first aid on campus, please dial 604-822-2222.
For emergencies, first call 9-1-1 and then call Campus Security for First Aid.
