Facilities teams work together to ensure an ideal exam experience for UBC students

Setting up an exam space is not an easy task — it requires hours of hard work and strict compliance with UBC’s exam requirements, especially with space setup and delivery of exam booklets.

Twice a year, at end of Term 1 and 2, Custodial Services and Municipal Services work together to set up Osborne Gym and Student Recreation Centre (SRC) Gym with 1,340 tables and chairs, to support and maintain an ideal exam experience for UBC students.

Municipal Services’ Streets & Operations Support (SOS) team move these items from South Campus warehouse to both gyms, where the Service Workers take over tarping the gym floors and laying out all of the items. During the exams, Custodial Services ensure the exam booklets in all of the exam spaces on campus are replenished.

Kudos to both teams for another excellent setup effort this past week!

Teardown of the exams will commence in the afternoon of December 22, 2022.

EDI: Winter weather accessibility

Snow and ice are problems for everyone living in winter climates. But they are exponentially worse for people with disabilities. This is especially so for disabled people who don’t drive, and have to rely on sidewalks and other pedestrian pathways to go to work, shop, or leave their homes for any reason.

Read this Forbes article about why and how we can do better on winter weather accessibility.

In this CBC podcast, an accessibility consultant from the north shore shares what the winter weather means for those living with disabilities.

Winter weather accessibility on campus

When extreme weather comes to UBC Vancouver, Municipal Services is responsible for managing snow and ice within the Vancouver campus. This map identifies priority roads, sidewalks and pathways that our crews will work towards when dealing with an ice or snow event. Once the priority routes are cleared, crews will focus on clearing other areas of campus. Learn more

Special thanks to Municipal Services & Custodial Services for managing snow and ice and keeping our campus community safe during extreme weather. Your hard work and commitment are appreciated!

Network Maintenance on January 7, 2023, 08:00-20:00

The AHUB1 router from the old style racks will be migrated to the new style rack in ANGUHUB. During the router move, users will lose network connectivity for up to 45 minutes.

Actual outage time should be approximately 10 mins, and the whole maintenance/validation should take under 1 hour. During the 10-minute outage, there will be no network connection for the devices behind the building and firewall contexts networks connected to the AHUB1 routers.

USB users should only have minor network interruptions.

A 12-hour maintenance window has been booked as a precaution to allow time to troubleshoot/rollback if required.

USB Wi-Fi Upgrade during the break, 27th to 30th

UBC IT Services will replace all existing Wi-Fi units and add additional units at USB over the holiday break.

They have access to a majority of the rooms and will work with UBC Security on those they do not have access to with your permission.
