Facilities is one of the recipients of the Campus as a Living Lab ‘Grand Challenge’ funding award

The Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) initiative leverages UBC’s unique campus environment as a collaborative space for researchers, students, staff and external partners. The CLL Grand Challenge encourages faculty and staff to work together on a project to effectively respond and adapt to the climate emergency.

UBC Facilities’ Energy & Water Services, in collaboration with the Faculty of Applied Science, received a funding award to undertake the Bioenergy from Commercial-Municipal Organic Waste project. This innovative project explores the potential of utilizing treated organic waste from municipal green bin programs as a sustainable biomass source for the Bioenergy Research Demonstration Facility (BRDF).

The team will address the dual challenges of efficient waste management and sustainable energy production, demonstrating a practical solution to enhance UBC’s operational sustainability.
