Upgrades & renovations in Orchard Commons Room 1001

Construction: April to end of August 2023

Orchard Commons Room 1001 is currently undergoing renovation work to create an active learning classroom. Active Learning Classrooms are learning spaces aimed to support teaching that encourages student interaction, group work, and critical thinking. The new layout will be a high tech ‘learn lab’, featuring group tables with technology that allows both instructors and students to share their work with the class through digital displays at each table.

This work will include the replacement of furniture and AV equipment, patch and repair of concrete and drywall walls, demolition and installation of new electrical and IT cabling, removing /relocating the existing floor boxes, new finishes (painting and flooring), and installation of a new accessible door operator. During this work, a small construction laydown area may be set-up in the courtyard area outside of Room 1001 for delivery of materials at various stages throughout the project.

Upcoming scheduled work

 APRIL

  • There may be some intermittent noise during the removal of furniture and equipment, however, this work should have minimal disruption to the adjacent spaces.

MAY 10-17

  • Saw-cutting of the concrete slab is expected to begin on Wednesday, May 10 and to be completed by Wednesday May 17. This work is expected to generate increased noise disruption and has been scheduled outside of regular business hours.

LATE JUNE

  • There will be increased noise due to hammer-drilling for installation of backing and new drywall in late June. This work will be scheduled outside of regular business hours.
