As the vibrant colors of fall settle in, so do shorter daylight hours and unpredictable weather conditions. Be sure to prioritize safety both on and off the road during these darker months.
Drive safely: Use your headlights
With limited visibility due to rain, fog, and less light, make it a habit to switch on your headlights while driving, even during the day. This simple action can significantly improve visibility for both you and other drivers, reducing the risk of accidents.
Work safely: Wear reflective clothing
When working outdoors or walking in the yard, wearing a reflective safety jacket is essential. The bright and reflective materials ensure you’re visible to drivers and other workers, especially in areas with heavy equipment or vehicles.
Winter safety
We’re heading into the time of year where people in Vancouver are unprepared for snow. Keep the following in mind this winter:
- Learn how to walk on slippery ground during the winter season.
- Read up on Weather and Thermal Stress Safety.
- In extreme weather, updates on campus conditions, classes or exams are posted on ubc.ca.
- Download the UBC Safe Vancouver app and turn on your notifications (including weather advisories, class cancellations, etc.).
- Review UBC’s winter weather protocols for staff, visit the Human Resources website [CWL required].
Let’s keep each other safe as we transition into winter. Remember, a little extra caution goes a long way. Stay visible, stay safe!
