IK Barber Learning Centre New Service Desk, Coaching and Tutorial Pavilions

Project Snapshot

Project Manager: UBC Project Services – Ed Cepka

Project Summary

Project purpose: to provide students with a new central information point on Level 3 and new group learning areas for coaching and tutoring.

The resources and circulation functions which were previously located in several different areas were consolidated into one service point. The new desk includes:

  • technology support – laptops, wireless printing, software, mobile device troubleshooting,
  • academic learning support – referral to tutoring, writing support and academic coaching, and
  • library circulation functions.

Semi-private tutoring, meeting and coaching spaces were also created within the context of a large open learning area with a design that recognizes and enhances the design of one of UBC’s signature buildings.

The free-standing pavilions which house the Service Desk, tutoring and coaching pavilions were constructed out of clear 2” x 6” Douglas fir, an iconic building material in British Columbia, to harmonize with the extensive fir paneling in the building. The open, yet still private design recognizes the high ceilings and open spaces of the IKBLC.
