A year in review: A look at Custodial Services

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Custodial Services has been playing an important role in keeping spaces in the UBC Vancouver campus clean and safe. As we start the new year, we’d like to share an overview and some facts about Custodial Services and our campus.

UBC at a glance in 2021

  • 9,000,000 sq. ft. of campus space cleaned.
  • 100 000+ rolls of toilet paper were replaced.
  • 450 000+ rolls paper towels were replaced
  • 1000 + hand sanitizer stations were refilled (150/year for pre-covid-19)
  • 9000+ soap dispensers were refilled.
  • 10,000 lightbulbs were replaced.
  • 300+ doors are locked/unlocked daily

LED lighting retrofit campaign

Since 2017, UBC has started a multi-phase T8 fluorescent to LED retrofit project to replace fluorescent lights with LEDs on campus. To date, Custodial Services has helped replace more than 61,000 fluorescent lights with LEDs in 39 buildings on the UBC Vancouver campus. Learn more on the Energy & Water Services website.

Free menstrual products on campus+

Custodial Services has been working with Free Periods Canada, a grassroots organization founded by UBC students, to promote intersectional menstrual equity by ensuring all menstruators have access to the products and information they need.

Since 2019, Custodial Services has installed menstrual dispensers in approximately 300 washrooms across campus offering free menstrual products. Learn more on the Free Periods Canada website.
