Project: Sustainable Timber-Built Environment Laboratory
Location: Centre for Advanced Wood Processing courtyard, Forest Sciences Centre Room 1921
Construction on the Sustainable Timber-Built Environment Laboratory will begin on August 6, 2024 and is anticipated to be completed by the end of December 2024.
The Faculty of Forestry’s Department of Wood Science, Sustainable Timber-Built Environment (STBE) cluster requires a high head laboratory space for testing full-size wall and floor connections and Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) systems for strength and performance in static and seismic conditions. The space must also accommodate a large-scale wood press for panel manufacturing and fire performance research.
The southeast corner of the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) courtyard will be renovated to enclose a space for the laboratory that will be connected to existing CAWP infrastructure and services.
What to expect during construction
- Noise from construction activities is to be expected for occupants in the Forest Sciences Centre as well as in neighbouring buildings, especially where occupants may have windows or doors open.
- Asphalt removal and concrete forming and placement (heavy truck/machinery noise) will occur in August through mid-September.
- Delivery of materials and installation of new columns and beams will occur throughout September (vehicular and structural impact noises).
- Intermittent noise from construction will continue with ongoing deliveries and construction activities until December 2024, mostly affecting adjacent spaces.
- Forest Sciences Centre Room 1921 and the southeast corner of the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) courtyard will be closed during construction.
- Access to the CAWP courtyard will be via the gates off East Mall only (no access from Agronomy).
