Lapu Lapu Day Tragedy – Supports for Facilities Staff

Dear Facilities colleagues,

On behalf of the Facilities Leadership Team, I wish to convey the profound sense of loss that we share with all of you and the community in the wake of the devastating events at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party on Saturday night. This horrific and senseless act has deeply affected many on our team and I want to acknowledge the pain and grief that many of you may be feeling, especially those who are part of the Filipino community or have personal connections to those impacted. Our thoughts are with you.

Please take care of yourselves and one another in this very difficult time. For those who are in need of support, we will have grief counsellors available on campus. Please reach out to your manager or supervisor, who can confidentially connect you with these supports during your shift. The Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) is also available to all UBC employees and their families and offers confidential counseling and mental health resources. We encourage you to make use of these supports as you need for your wellbeing.

Many of our team are part of the Filipino community. This is a strong and joyful community that is suffering right now. I would ask that in the coming days you show extra care for your colleagues and friends who may be hurting.

With sincere sympathy,

John Metras and the Facilities Leadership Team
