West Mall Swing Space District Energy System Upgrade
Construction: June 2 – End of July 2025
The underground utility construction portion of the West Mall Swing Space conversion from natural gas to the District Energy System is anticipated to begin on June 2, 2025 and anticipated to take about 9 weeks.
This upgrade will help drive UBC’s move to carbon neutrality and the decrease green house gas production on campus.
Here’s what to expect during construction
- Construction noise from excavation and other construction work should be expected.
- The pedestrian path between the West Parkade and the University Services Building will be closed during construction (see green section of photo below).
- The West Parkade south entrance (2nd floor) onto the pedestrian path will be closed. Entrances at the southwest (1st floor) and southeast (4th floor) corners will remain open.
- Alternative accessible routes between Lower Mall and West Mall are available via University Boulevard to the north and Agronomy Road to the south.
- Lower Mall will have some intermittent road work with single-lane alternating control.
