Anthropology and Sociology (ANSO) Renewal set to begin in January 2026

Estimated construction dates: January 2026 – August 2028

Construction on the Anthropology and Sociology (ANSO) Renewal is anticipated to begin in January 2026.

Currently, the envelope and infrastructure of the Anthropology and Sociology building are at the end of their service life, requiring seismic upgrades, improved system reliability, and enhanced occupant comfort. During the renovation, existing finishes and systems will be removed down to the existing concrete structure. The building will be fully reconstructed with new systems, an upgraded envelope, and a revised interior layout to support modern research and teaching.

The ANSO Renewal presents an opportunity to improve the building’s energy performance and align overall performance with current codes and UBC guidelines. It is a critical step in providing a healthy, safe, and modern environment for learning and work at UBC.

Here’s what to expect during construction

  • Nearby buildings and areas should expect noise from renovation work and construction vehicles at the Anthropology and Sociology Complex.
  • Expect increased construction traffic and vehicle noise along Cecil Green Park Road and Northwest Marine Drive.
  • Temporary traffic and pedestrian detours may be required during different phases of construction.
  • There will be no access to the Anthropology and Sociology Complex and surrounding outdoor areas during construction. Building users have been notified about their temporary relocation.

We will continue to share more information as the project start dates approaches and during construction. View the project summary.
