Safety bollards play a critical role in protecting our campus community

As we start the September school year, a reminder that driving on campus presents some challenges with pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders, and vehicles of all types.

Safety bollards are essential to provide a protective barrier that helps prevent accidents and potential harm to pedestrians. However, we’ve recently received reports of bollards being lowered and not raised again after vehicle passage. Additionally, some bollards have been damaged due to vehicles driving through without properly lowering and resetting them. These issues not only pose safety risks but also increase maintenance costs for the university.

For UBC vehicles that are driving through areas behind the safety bollard, please ensure you use a bollard wrench to drop the bollards before driving through and reset the bollard once the vehicle has passed through. For UBC Facilities staff, please ensure you have the proper bollard wrench or order one through the Facilities’ Stores.

For external contractors, please contact the Facilities Service Centre to request access from Municipal Services to drop the bollard for your vehicle to drive through restricted areas. In the case of an emergency, first responders may proceed through the bollards.
