UBC Facilities working with UBC student team to build a net zero carbon student space on campus

Construction: End of July 2022 to February 2023

UBC Facilities is working together with UBC’s award-winning Third Quadrant Design—a team of more than 60 students in engineering, architecture, business, and arts to help plan and manage a new student space on campus that redefines sustainable design

The 247-square-metre building, officially known as the Third Space Commons, will serve as a collaborative working space and living laboratory for students, industry partners and researchers to investigate zero emission, regenerative and climate-resilient design.

What to expect during construction

  • Increased noise during the first few weeks of the project due to the hydro vacuum excavation work.
  • General construction noise around the construction area (trucks, small excavators, use of tools, and moving equipment and materials).
  • Electrical shutdown will be required at the Douglas T. Kenny Building. This will be scheduled in advance and building occupants will be notified in advance.
  • Intermittent sidewalk closures and pedestrian pathways around the area may be re-routed, but access to buildings will be maintained.
