Jack Bell Building Renewal

Jack Bell Building Renewal

Construction: Until late 2025

Construction will begin this month on the Jack Bell Building Renewal. This project will mitigate deferred maintenance and seismically upgrade the building, while also reconfiguring its existing spaces to support state-of-the-art learning environments for the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Arts. The replacement of outdated mechanical and electrical systems, envelope upgrade, and seismic upgrades will support UBC’s Climate Action Plan and seismic resilience planning.

Construction will last from February 2024 until late 2025.

What to expect during construction

  • Heavy demolition work will commence in February 2024 and continue for approximately four months.
  • Expect noise from construction activities and construction traffic, with increased noise during initial demolition period.
  • The Jack Bell Building will be closed to the public and building occupants for the duration of the construction period. All occupants and programs in the building have been temporarily relocated to swing spaces in other campus buildings.
  • The sidewalk on the east side of West Mall in front of the Jack Bell Building will be closed for the duration of the construction period.
  • Periodic road closures will occur during major deliveries and craning equipment and materials onto site.
  • Notifications will be provided in advance should there be construction work that may be impactful to nearby buildings and activities.

We are working closely with your building administrators and our UBC partners to minimize impact where possible. For more information on this project, visit the Facilities website.
