Safety bollards play a critical role in protecting our campus community

As we start the September school year, a reminder that driving on UBC campuses presents some challenges with pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders, and vehicles of all types.

The safety bollards are essential to provide a protective barrier that helps prevent accidents and potential harm to pedestrians. We have recently received reports of damaged and broken bollards due to vehicles driving through the bollards without properly dropping and resetting when passing through restricted areas of the campus. Broken bollards create a safety concern and increases the university’s maintenance costs.

For UBC vehicles that are driving through areas behind the safety bollard, please ensure you are using a bollard wrench to drop the bollards before driving through and resetting the bollard once the vehicle has passed through. For Facilities staff, please ensure you have the proper bollard wrench or order one through the Facilities’ Stores.

For external contractors, please contact the Facilities Service Centre to request access from Municipal Services to drop the bollard for your vehicle to drive through restricted areas. In the case of an emergency, first responders may proceed through the bollards.
