Say Goodbye to the old Power House

The demolition of the Power House is in progress and slated for completion in March of 2024 to make way for the planned development of the UBC Sauder Power House Expansion. The Sauder Power House Expansion project is a new 11-storey building that will sit on the former Power House site and include classrooms, teaching labs and innovative learning spaces, offices and support space.  UBC Sauder School of Business is in a significant period of innovation and growth in its student population, program portfolio and faculty complement.

The Power House demolition began in June 2023 with interior building clean-up of non-hazardous materials followed by abatement work and systems shutdown. Once demolition is complete, the site will be handed over to UBC Properties Trust for development.

Originally built in 1925, with further additions, the Power House was designed to house the boilers used to produce and distribute mixed-use steam for the heating of campus buildings, and served the UBC Vancouver campus with a safe and reliable building heat for decades. As the building aged, the building was identified as at a high risk of collapse during a seismic event and a significant vulnerability to the campus infrastructure.
