Project Summary

In partnership with industry and government, the UBC Clean Energy Research Centre: Clean, Connected and Safe Transportation Testbed (Transportation Testbed project) will be an exciting, city-scale, living laboratory that will emulate critical links between energy, transportation, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and urban design. It has been designed as a unique national platform to develop the next generation of clean, connected, and safe transportation systems for businesses and communities across the country. This world-leading approach reflects the evolution of transportation systems from passive, distinct entities into an interconnectedness of people, information, technologies, devices and products.

The Solar Array project will provide power to the Transportation Testbed, and includes the design and installation of an array of photovoltaic panels on a metal support structure and connection to the power grid. Located on the rooftop level of Thunderbird Parkade, the array will harness the sun’s energy, and the electricity produced will charge electric vehicles, create hydrogen, charge a large stationary battery system, or feed the grid.
